Being One With The Spirit

Hey everyone,

This week has been super amazing. It flew by, and I think the reason for that is because Elder Meldrum and I put the majority of our focus on referral confirmations. This was so amazing because it was kind of like street contacting in the sense that you are talking with them with your voice. A referral confirmation is when we get a request for a Bible, Book of Mormon, or Missionary visit request. So what we do is we ask for their address so that we can get the information to the local missionaries, and the local missionaries fulfill the caller's request.

So this week I thought about being at one with the spirit. What I mean by this is recognizing a prompting and then acting on it. We don't know what effect we could have had on another if we do not act on the promptings given to us. I have seen the change that comes in a person's life because God knows their needs, and He uses us to fulfill those needs.

I know that as we follow the spirit, change will come to us and to others. I know that Heavenly Father knows our needs and He wants what is best for us. Our weaknesses can become our strengths if we put our trust in God. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

We had an adventure today. Elder Schwendiman, Elder Meldrum, Elder Southwick, Elder Zaugg, Elder Curtis, Elder Fleming and I all went to the field. What we did was we played ladder golf. That’s the game where you have two golf balls together on a string and you try and wrap them around the poles of a ladder by throwing them from a distance away. Anyway the balls that they gave us were lighter than they usually are so we had trouble throwing them with the right strength. Anyway Elder Schwendiman got one stuck in a tree that was behind where we were playing. So we were trying to think of how to get it down. So what we did was Elder Schwendiman took one of Elder Zaugg's crutches and extended it all the way. He then had me and Elder Meldrum lift him up, and when we did he started whacking the tree and we couldn't see what was happening because it was mostly dark at the time this happened, because this was right before we were about to leave. Anyway we got a flashlight and after a bit of tree whacking, we got the golf balls to come down.

Today was really good. In church we talked a lot about the importance of doing your home teaching. They said even if you don't have time for a lesson just drop by their house and see how they are doing. Which I thought was a great idea.

I went on exchanges with Elder Curtis. It was super fantastic. We taught one of his investigators named Darryl. Darryl just had his mom die so that made our talk with him really good because we got to talk about the Spirit World and life after death. We both felt the spirit was really strong as Elder Curtis and I talked to Darryl and just were able to give words of comfort.

Elder and Sister Cook came and spoke at tonight's devotional. They both said really good things. Sister Cook told us to look and act like we have the truth because we do. She also said "be your own true convert till the end of your life." That was really good because I had heard that we need to continually be doing better and doing the things that God would have us do but I hadn't really heard it put that way before. Elder Quentin L. Cook said a lot of amazing things. He talked about the four loves you need to have as a missionary.

The four "loves" a missionary needs:

  1. Love your companion
  2. Love the people
  3. Love your mission president
  4. Love the savior

One other thing I liked that Elder Cook said was "when you have a sacred experience, you need to keep it sacred." It was at this moment that I got a bit of inspiration that said unless the spirit directs. But that is really important and it helped me think about what have been sacred experiences for me.

I had a member exchange today that was really interesting. The member I was with spoke Korean, and he had a lesson in Korean. It was really cool because The member asked me what we should talk to her about. So I though for a minute and told him I think that we should talk about blessings and the sacrament. I didn't really say much because I don't know Korean, but after he told me that that was exactly what she needed.

We had zone conference today and it was amazing. The lesson was on tools of the spirit. We read Alma chapter 17 verse by verse and applied it to our own lives as missionaries. After that, we had some announcements.

The announcements:

  1. We are going to learn how to use Facebook as a source for finding.
  2. A letter about the referral center was sent out to every mission president and all of the seventy. This was really special because missionaries and mission presidents often don't know about us so that causes some problems like we can't Skype in for baptisms or the missionaries feel like we are stealing their investigator when we teach them. So this made me really happy.
  3. We are expanding the referral center continually. Right now only people with disabilities are at the referral center, but that may not be the case in the near future.
  4. President Martino is trying to get us laptops so that we can be outside from time to time and not stay in one room all day.

We talked with a new investigator named Lattera. She is super awesome. She really wants to improve her relationship with God and be as Christlike as she can be. She told us that she was going to church this Sunday and we didn't even invite her to go. She also accepted a baptismal date for November 4th.

Today Our district went bowling at BYU (Elder Zaugg, Elder Schwendiman, Elder Curtis, Elder Meldrum, Elder Stewart, and I). I had a super fun time because even though none of us did that well, we would still cheer each other on, especially when the bowling ball went into the gutter. It was also nice because we were all able to talk.

I love you all and hope you have a great rest of your week.

Love,

Elder Stevenson
